Short Term Missions: Loving Our Neighbor
Imagine the opportunity to help bring God’s Word to people in their own
John & Denise have been approved to work on Wycliffe building projects. They received an email inviting them to help complete a new Wycliffe Associates Support Center in Orlando, Florida. John very strongly empathized with the request for volunteers to work. He thought to himself, "I'd go to volunteer, if only…" Then, if only, slowly turned into actually trying to figure out how to go.
John & Denise felt God calling them to do this, and doors seem to be opening. So they prayed, sought council and support and left for Florida on Friday evening after work on April 22.
What has happened since that time has been a continuing confirmation that they are on the path that God prepared. John and Denise choose to drive to Orlando because they are hauling their RV, which they intend to live in for the next 6 weeks, while volunteering for Wycliffe. They planned to drive through the southern states, not knowing just prior to their arrival massive disaster would occur due to the tornadoes that have hit the South. John and Denise arrived in Alabama Friday April 29th, in the midst of the devastating destruction caused by the recent tornadoes.
Now that they are in Alabama, they are making connections and are a helping hand in many ways. To say it short, they are loving their neighbor. Little did any of us know when they left what they would be called to do; but God knew. Now John and Denise have choices to make; choices that they are prayerfully seeking God's will and direction for. They are asking the Lord when they should continue on their way to Orlando. Is it more important for them to help in Alabama? Each of us who have supported them are confident they will choose God's will. Each of us who supported them also know that in a small way, we each have loved our neighbor in sending John and Denise. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, neighbor.

Grow Where Planted
Karen, a church member, brought in this vivid illustration. We are familiar with the pharse, "bloom where you are planted", but how about "bloom, even if you are never planted" This flower bulb, cast aside, left in an old onion bag, never was put in fertile ground. Never planted, and yet it persisted and bloomed... against all odds. It is a picture for us to consider. No matter where we are in life. Even if the grass looks greener on the other side, we can still bloom.
Loving My Neighbor
- why
- how
- and we can throw in who, what, where and when
Jesus said the first command is to Love the Lord and the second is to love our neighbor. What does this mean? Why is it important? How can we love our neighbor and who is our neighbor? This may seem simple in concept, but put it into practice, practically and daily. I want to... I am commanded to and I know the right thing to do, but...
Lord teach us to love! Give us courage to love!
